Tales of Seikyu: How to Fish

You will learn fishing early in Tales of Seikyu. The controls can feel a little tricky at first, but after a few attempts, you’ll get the hang of casting and reeling in your catch. Timing is important, especially when you reel in a fish after tiring it out, so don’t get discouraged if you miss a few in the beginning. Also, some species are intentionally difficult to catch until you upgrade your fishing rod and improve your Fishing skill.

I would recommend playing the game on a handheld device or with a controller, especially if you want a smoother fishing experience. I’m playing on my ROG Xbox Ally and have been enjoying it a lot so far! The game supports PlayStation and Xbox controller maps.

Request Board

Read the letter from Yui. She wants you to meet her near the fountain to know more about the Request Board.

Use the map to find the fountain. Fast-travel by teleporting to the unlocked Fox Shrine from the map.

Teleport near the fountain

Talk to Yui. She introduces you to the town’s Request Board, located near the fountain. Whenever a resident needs help, they will post a request here. Some residents may also post special requests for rare items found around town. Completing requests rewards you with useful items and other benefits.

As you work through the town’s requests, you will meet many residents. Speaking with them may help you find out what happened to the foxes that once lived in Seikyu.

How to Get the Fishing Rod

The very first request I recommend taking is “Teach a Yokai to Fish.” Not only is it easy to complete, but it also teaches you the basics of fishing.

Accept the side quest "Teach a Yokai to Fish"

Select this request and choose Accept. You will get 200 gold (the game’s primary currency) on completion of this request.

Head to the Fish ‘n’ Tackle shop and talk to Torleone. Choose “I don’t have a fishing rod” when he requests you to catch fish:

He will give you a beginner’s rod. Once you have mastered catching fish with the basic rod, you can buy a better one from Torleone. Needless to say, better fishing rods help you catch better fish.

Once you get the basic rod, move near the water. Here’s a basic guide to catching fish in Tales of Seikyu:

1. Equip the basic rod from the radial menu

Start fishing. Check the tutorial notes.

2. Press and hold the cast button to cast your fishing rod. You can see its durability on the lower-left corner of the screen:

Cast the line

3. Wait for the fish to bite.

4. When a fish bites, its stamina gauge will appear at the top of the screen. Pay attention to the fish’s movements and follow the on-screen prompts. If the fish pulls sharply to the right, move your line in the opposite direction to counter its movement. Keep resisting the fish until its stamina gauge is depleted.

Wait for the bite and hold the button to pull against the fish

5. As soon as the fish’s stamina is fully depleted, reel it in before the gauge has a chance to replenish. Timing is important here.

6. In your first attempt, you won’t catch a fish but a strange-looking cucumber. All of a sudden, it transforms into a Kappa. Kappas are water-dwelling Yokai, a reptilian humanoid. His name is Prince, and he is from the legendary Kappa village.

6. He reveals that he is searching for his soulmate, so you may end up helping him later in the story. Before leaving, he says he’ll visit again and take you on a tour of his underwater castle. As a parting gift, he gives you a token called the “Kappa’s Keepsake,” a strange-looking stone. Unlocking this item also increases your Fishing skill by +1 and Gathering skill by +5.

New item unlocked: Kaapa's Keepsake

7. Continue fishing until you catch x2 Crucian Carp to complete the request.

8. Talk to Torleone after completing his request. Give him fish to earn x200 gold.
